Additional Fees & Requirements

1. Licence Plate & Registration Fee — $65

A $65 Licence Plate & Registration Fee may apply when a new licence plate and/or registration processing is required for the rental vehicle.

This charge covers the applicable costs associated with preparing the vehicle for the renter, including plate and registration processing.

The applicable government, ICBC, and registration requirements may vary depending on the vehicle and rental arrangement. 

2. Insurance Required for the Rental

The renter must have valid insurance coverage applicable to the rental vehicle for the entire rental period.

For rentals in British Columbia, insurance arrangements must comply with applicable ICBC and provincial requirements. The renter may be able to use existing B.C. insurance coverage in certain circumstances, but they should confirm with their Autoplan broker that their coverage applies to the specific rental vehicle and rental arrangement.

3. Affordable Rental Insurance for B.C. Residents

For eligible B.C. residents who do not already have suitable rental-vehicle coverage, an affordable rental insurance option may be available.

ICBC offers Rental Vehicle Coverage that can provide protection for the renter and rented vehicle, subject to eligibility, vehicle limitations and policy terms. Coverage can include options such as Third Party Liability, Accident Benefits, Collision, Comprehensive and Loss of Use.

The renter’s insurance cost may depend on factors such as:

  • Rental vehicle
  • Rental period
  • Driver eligibility
  • Coverage selected
  • Deductible
  • Insurance history
  • Applicable ICBC requirements

The final insurance cost and available coverage will be confirmed before the rental begins.

Insurance coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable insurer or ICBC policy.

4. Rental Documentation & Administration Fee

A Rental Documentation & Administration Fee may apply to the renter.

This fee covers the administrative work required to process and prepare the rental, which may include:

  • Preparing the rental agreement
  • Verifying renter identification and information
  • Processing rental documentation
  • Preparing vehicle handover documents
  • Processing applicable plate or registration paperwork
  • Vehicle check-in and check-out administration
  • Maintaining required rental records

Any applicable documentation or administration fee will be clearly disclosed to the renter before the rental agreement is finalized.

Renter's Responsibilities

The renter is responsible for:

  • Providing valid identification and required documents
  • Providing or obtaining appropriate insurance coverage
  • Paying applicable rental, plate, registration and administration charges
  • Complying with applicable British Columbia driving and insurance requirements
  • Providing proof of insurance when requested
  • Following the terms and conditions of the rental agreement

Renters should confirm their insurance coverage with their Autoplan broker or insurer before operating the rental vehicle.
